Today, we will take a look at the elephantine proportion of Android goodness in the year 2013. Which company blew the hats off the people in the time period, and which apps proved that smartphones are very capable of console-level graphics?
The company that lifted its weight up
This is quite obvious. While HTC, Apple, Samsung, and Sony were busy with all the patent filing and court fighting; Motorola was busy making great quality phones. They topped out this time because of their flagships, and mid-tier phones, the Moto X and Moto G. They were once the ultra-low level OEM before. Google's acquirement of the company sets off the hat for some people. Their smartphones including the underrated, Motorola Droid branding, and the so-hyped new Moto series.
They're slowly growing as an Android company, releasing impressive devices at impressive price points. I really hope they make more high-end devices and make them available world-wide.
The app that got everyone's attention
This year, we saw several console-level titles released to Android including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Final Fantasy IV, Sonic the Hedgehog (1 and 2), Riptide GP2, along with others. They have stunning graphics, longer campaigns, competent mechanics and gameplay, and while some of them are remakes of actual console games, some are totally original. EA, who wins awards every year for their sports titles, have started releasing sports games on mobile as well (albeit not as good as their console titles because their IAPs are terrible). It'll be exciting to see them put the same effort into 2014's titles that do on their console titles every year.
These are just a few of top headlines this year. It's good to see that Motorola is now gone from the dead, and living up its way to all-goodness with its Google-backed ecosystem. Games on mobile are sub-par to its console brethren.
