The New Year is upon us and with it comes a suitcase full of gadgets sporting the sophisticated aspect on it. Be ready - the year is full of wearable tech, 4K madness, breakthrough gaming, updated tablets, electric cars, and funky laptops. Welcome to 2014.
Here enlists our predictions for what to expect in the world of gadgets in 2014. Do bare this in mind; these are predictions based on everything we've already seen and heard from the industry in 2013 - so don't go unrestrained if we have speculations of a walking television - these are all just a guess based on the current state of technology. To much chatter, let's proceed:
Google Glass
The year 2013 was the all-time breakout of Google's smart glasses to the world. Speculations are strong on Google's wearable, Google Glass 2 this year. We already know that Google Glass 2 is coming soon as developers have been told they can swap out their Explorer models for the new ones. When they actually hit the market is unknown.
Google knows it's taking a big step so it's taking it slowly. This is to make sure that it's not only perfect as hardware but also has an apps ecosystem ready to go. For that reason no release date is set and Google isn't in a rush. Although with other manufacturers powering ahead, Google needs to make a move.
The 2K standard for smartphones and 4K content for TVs
Last few days, I posted something about 2K on smartphones, you might want to check that one up.
With Netflix announcing it'll be streaming the next series of its award-winning House of Cards in 4K this is just the start. Most films are already shot in 4K (if not 5K) these days so the content is out there, it's just waiting someone to distribute the stuff. If Netflix cracks streaming 4K over current internet connections it'll only be a matter of waiting for 4K TV prices to drop.
Samsung Galaxy Gear 2
Sammy is set to unveil an upgraded version (hopefully with apps this time around). The new Galaxy Gear 2 should feature its built-in GPS. With the watch running apps and music you could leave your phone at home when out on a run.
Flexible OLED TVs
Samsung and LG are both due to show off flexible OLED screens that move to suit your viewing angle at CES. Following that could be the release of this new type of television, just like last year when we saw curved OLEDs hitting the shelves of shops.
While OLEDs already priced high, let alone curved ones, we can only imaging how long it'll take flexible curved OLEDs to become affordable.
All Apple: iPhone 6, iWatch, iPad Air 2
What's 2014 without Apple hitting it big time? This time around, Apple supposedly would release the new iPhone 6, we expect a jump up in its screen size, perhaps following the footsteps of the popular Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear combo with the iWatch. The iPad Air 2 is also expected to be released in the said year.
3D printing en masse
As we all know, Windows 8 (and above) are all able to support 3D printing right out of the box. Now all you need is the hardware that's capable of it. 3D printers are still primitive in terms of their pricing (goes off the roof), but we expect them at cheaper and affordable prices in 2014.
