10 Steps on how to setup your Wireless Router manually

If you have bought a wireless router or is planning to, setting up your router might be tricky.

Step 1: Buy a router.

Choosing a router is hard. Your budget determines what kind of router you will have. Typical ones costs $20-$80 and can go upwards to a $130 for the best one. There's some things you need to consider:

+ Encryption (Be it WEP/WPA/WPA2, I'd suggest the latter two as they are much more secured than the former)

+ Speed (Two options, 300Mbps/150Mbps/54Mbps. The only real thing we need to keep straight about this is that the higher Mbps, the better, the caveat: more expensive)

+ Range (Most routers come with 3dBi antennas. While this is sufficient for a small apartment, you may want to have much more powerful i.e indoor 15dBi antennas or buy a router with 3x 3dBi antennas for maximum coverage on large houses but don't overdo it. A 10dBi is way overkill for a small house but don't worry on this just yet as router antennas could easily be upgraded)

+ Wireless A/B/G/N or Wireless AC (They do go in that order. Wireless A provides the lowest range and speed while Wireless AC supports dual band @ 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz (more on this matter on the next category), you may want at least a wireless N which is the current standard for wireless routers. Some routers even provide the option to switch between all of these.)

+ Bands (Does not pertain to a musical group but rather 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands of routers. 2.4Ghz is currently the standard though 5Ghz is still in its premature stage, it'll catch up in the near future and is not supported in all devices. Unless you want futureproofing don't bother with the 5Ghz band which is exclusive on high-end routers)

+ USB Support (Basically, a usb storage device is plugged into a router, then every device connected to your router can then access the files stored on it.)

Step 2: Get all the stuff inside of the box, out.

    This usually would include:
The Router, A Lan Cable, A Power adapter, Antennae/Antennas, Reading Materials (Including the quick start guide) and a CD for the setup.

Step 3: Plug the phone line and the Ethernet cable (RJ45) to your DSL (If you already have, skip this step)

Plug the phone line (left) and Ethernet cable (right) to your DSL.

Step 4: Plug the end of the Ethernet cable to your router.

The gray (may vary in color) wire to the port named 'WAN' which stands for Wireless Area Network.

Step 5: Connect all the Antennas.

Connect all antennas that came with it out of the box. Turn it in the clock-wise direction until it's snug-tight.

Step 6: Time to plug them both.

Plug the DSL and Router on your electric socket and turn them both on.

Step 7: Log in to your computer and connect to your router.

It may have a ! icon on the bars. That's normal. Don't be alarmed just yet. If once you connect it asks for a username/pass combo, then check under your router. It's typically located there or if not,

Use http://www.routerpasswords.com/
Check your manufacturers website.
Ask the service crew where you purchased it.

Step 7: Press Win+R on your keyboard and type cmd. Once it appears, enter 'ipconfig' (without the quotes).

Step 8: Take note of the Default Gateway.

Step 9: Enter the Gateway (hereafter; IP Address) in your web browser.

It may ask you to enter the Username/Password, again refer to Step 7 for it.

Step 10: Click 'Quick Setup' / 'Easy Setup' / 'Full Setup' or anything of the same caliber.

Set your name, Select Static/DHCP, Add a security.
It will restart for at least 10 seconds then you'll be disconnected (naturally).
Connect to the network again with the new password you entered on setup

Tip #1: If it asks you to set STATIC/DHCP, I'll be certain it's DHCP for every household.
Tip #2: For maximum security, Select WPA/WPA2 with AES/TKIP.
Tip #3: Set a password on your IP Address (Default gateway) so only YOU can access this portal.

That's basically it! Hope it works out well for you. Otherwise, leave a comment below.
