iPad Mini 2 vs Nexus 7 (2013)

The iPad Mini with Retina Display as subtle as its release, is compared with the latest iteration of Google's Nexus 7.

SCREEN

Just not too long ago when the original iPad Mini was released with its Non-Retina display. This came as a shock but without a doubt would get an upgrade soon. That 'soon' timeshift just came early this month. The iPad Mini has the same resolution as its big brother, the iPad. The latest Nexus 7 has an impressive display
as well, rated at 1920 by 1200 pixels. Both are around 326ppi (The Nexi, at 325. A 1 negative is never a let down). Both has a superior pixel density. However the iPad has a larger screen, which is 7.9 inches versus the Nexus 7's 7inches (hence the name). An extra inch larger means a lot when you're trying to get your work done. Larger real estate is better for productivity.

Verdict: The iPad Mini 2 with it's larger screen real estate makes a win for this round.

Applications

While the Nexus 7 has a wide variety of applications, including many productivity-boosters, The Nexus 7's Play Store pales in competition with Apple's App Store. There are thousands of curated apps specifically tailored for the iPad lineup - including the iPad Mini's.

Verdict: iPad Mini 2 with it's iOS App Store provides thousands of apps tailored for the iPad.

Horsepower

The all-new iPad Mini 2 comes with the same spec sheet with its younger sibling; the iPhone 5S and its big brother; the iPad Air. The iPad Mini 2 comes with a blazing fast 64-bit A7 chip. Which is more powerful than Nexus 7's 1.5Ghz quad-core Snaprdragon S4 Pro. But as of today's standards, that won't mean much. If future-proofing is your thing, then your best bet is the iPad Mini 2, it'd be able to handle anything thrown at it in the future.

Verdict: While we have a tie, for future-proofing, you're most likely going to buy the iPad Mini 2.

Ease of Use

This is a no-brainer, while I'm not saying android is hard to use, iOS definitely made it far with this category release after release. Unless customization's your thing, it's better to go with iOS for this category's sake. And with iOS's 7 new non-skeumorphic look (In which I'm not fond of), it's better than ever. (Technically because of its refreshed look without losing its Ease of Use throne)

Verdict: Apple's iPad Mini 2 with iOS 7.

Customization

As mentioned above, Google's Android operating system wins by far on this category. It offers a lot more out of the box.
While you can do this on iOS with third party tweaking (called 'Jailbreak'), nothing surpasses what Android can do (customization-wise) out of the box.

Verdict: Google's Nexus 7 with Android 4.4

This one is easy, for the most bang for your buck, it would be wise choosing the Nexus 7. The most-expensive Google Nexus 7 retails for about $349 with LTE. While Apple's least-expensive retails for $399 for the 16GB without the data connection. However, if you're into future-proofing then it's no doubt that you have to get the iPad Mini 2 with its top A7 64-bit architecture and larger screen.

Verdict: Bang for your buck: Nexus 7, Future-proofing: iPad Mini 2

Bottom Line

If you don't mind paying an extra $50, then the iPad Mini 2 is a better bet for productivity. A subtle large screen, excellent horsepower, combined with the ease of use adds up for (the iPad Mini 2) be a better buy. If you're hooked onto Google's ecosystem, the Nexus will win you over the otherwise.
