The rumors for 2014 include smartphones making the leap to 2K displays. I know a lot of you are excited for this, but others are still skeptical over the leap. Today, I'll talk about reasons why I would love to get 2K displays, and the reasons why I am a little uneasy.
The Good
Once every manufacturer moves into the 2K realm, every entry to mid-range phones and tablets would feature either HD or FullHD displays. This would make HD and FHD the standard for the category. Naturally 2K and 4K displays will be more expensive in production, but their demand and quick adoption would instantly make 720p and 1080p panels less expensive, and therefore push innovation forward.
The Bad
Let's take a step back, buying an iPhone with the Retina display was amazing. It was stunning. However, much of the content wasn't ready for it. It took the Internet months to enhance the resolution of some of their website imagery, and therefore, even though the tablet wasn't designed to show you pixels, the content was.

It's pointless to have so much resolution on my device if it'll only bloat the content as we wait for better support
Another thing, how many of you can currently afford a 4K television? In all honesty, not much. That's the reality of most middle-class families. Why? Can you imagine watching a 1080p movie on a 2K display? That's going to be a nightmare. If YouTube still struggles with video buffering today, can you imagine the move to the 2K standard?
Does 2K display properly suffice for our priorities?
As far as this goes, do you really see pixels on a 1080p display? I doubt that very much - In fact, to the average human vision, we wouldn't be able to see the difference between 720p and 1080p displays. Even then, smartphones still struggle with basic things like battery life, how much more on 2K? To make matters worse, apps wouldn't take the advantage of the resolution if the size of the apps remains the same.
As for me, I would prefer OEM's to focus on other things like giving us more storage, and better battery life. The use of portable battery packs makes no-sense of having a 'smart' phone.
